Greg Sterling says “The Future of Online Shopping is Offline”.

In a concise blog post, Greg Sterling makes a solid case for why online shopping is ultimately about offline/local transactions. Amen.

The post ends with a question “The only question is how do publishers and site operators respond?”.

We believe an important part of their response is deploying web-based communication solutions to enable immediate and live conversations between site visitors and knowledgeable sales people. Shoppers might fill out “contact us” forms if they have a question about a product or service, but why leave them time to visit a competitors website before getting them an answer? Shoppers might ultimately find their way to a merchant’s store or showroom after doing some research online and clicking a map link, but why leave it to chance?

Web-based communication solutions for both publishers and site operators, like the ContactAtOnce! service, enable sales people to answer site visitors’ questions in real-time and promote a product or service. In most industries, leads in the form of live conversations with prospective customers are many times more likely to convert into sales than are “contact us” form leads and clicks on map links. In automotive, for example, live conversations are 2-3x more likely to result in a sale versus “contact us” form leads.
